Your local Waynesville moving crew

Waynesville sits about 30 miles southwest of Asheville, at roughly 2,700 feet in the Richland Creek valley. Most moves come in on I-40 and then the US 23/74 expressway, which bypasses the northwest side of town. US 276 runs through downtown.

Homes on the slopes around town sit higher still, and those roads can ice over before town does. If ice, snow or any other dangerous conditions are forecast for your move day, we’ll call you to change the start time or date before we put a crew on an unsafe road.

Moving to Waynesville: what to expect

About 10,000 people live in Waynesville, and the town’s median age is 49. Close to 3 in 10 residents are 65 or older. Before you book, tell us if your home is on a hillside lot or has a long driveway.

  • Downtown and Main Street. The Main Street Historic District is on the National Register. Expect on-street parking and foot traffic. We plan where the truck stops before move day.
  • Frog Level. This historic district along Richland Creek got its name from frequent flooding, and Helene proved it.
  • Hazelwood. Annexed by Waynesville in 1995, with a compact older core.
  • Lake Junaluska. Just north of town, a community of about 3,200 around a 200-acre lake and the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center.
  • Maggie Valley. Up US 19 to the west at about 2,800 feet, home to Cataloochee Ski Area. Bears sometimes wander through neighborhoods, so don’t leave packed trash or food boxes outside overnight.

Helene in Waynesville and the I-40 detour

Helene hit Waynesville on September 27, 2024. Richland Creek rose through Frog Level and left watermarks up to four feet high. Four commercial buildings near Depot and Commerce streets were rated substantially damaged, Hazelwood had standing water, and the Depot Street bridge was damaged. If you’re buying in or near Frog Level, ask about the property’s flood history before you schedule the move. Our WNC Migration Study tracks what the storm did to the regional housing market.

The bigger issue for long-distance moves is I-40 west of here. The Pigeon River Gorge section between Haywood County and Tennessee reopened in March 2025 with one lane each way, and NCDOT expects to restore all four lanes in late 2029. For moves to Knoxville or elsewhere in Tennessee, we plan around delays in the gorge or take another route.

What affects the cost of a Waynesville move

We quote every Waynesville move on its own details. These are the things that change the estimate most:

  • Distance from your current home, and whether the move is local or interstate
  • How much you’re moving, including basements, garages and outbuildings
  • Access: driveway grade and surface, stairs, and whether a full-size truck can reach the door
  • Packing: full or none
  • Timing: weekends, month-end and peak fall weekends book up first
