Military households come and go from Western North Carolina for all kinds of reasons: a new assignment, a family settling near relatives while a member serves elsewhere, or a veteran choosing the mountains after leaving service. Dry Ridge Moving has moved households in and out of the region since 2006.
This page is for moves you arrange yourself: a Personally Procured Move, or a private move by a veteran or a military family. If your transportation office is booking a government-arranged move, that office assigns the moving company. Longer trips work the way our long-distance movers page describes.
When you get orders, there are two broad ways to move your household goods. In a government-arranged move, your transportation office books a government-provided moving company for you. In a Personally Procured Move (PPM), you manage the move yourself, and a Military OneSource fact sheet on PPMs lists hiring a commercial moving company as one of the ways to do it.
That fact sheet describes two kinds of PPM:
The same fact sheet says you need your official orders and approval from your transportation office before moving, and it asks members who hire their own mover to discuss the details with that office first. A sensible order of steps:
Entitlements and rules vary by branch and situation, so the transportation office has the final word. We can’t approve or estimate reimbursement for you.
A PPM claim depends on documents. The fact sheet tells members to keep receipts for every expense and to make sure a hired mover also provides weight tickets. From us you get a written estimate before the move and receipts for what you pay. Because weight tickets matter for a Member-Elected PPM, raise them when you call so we can talk through what your branch needs before you book.
The fact sheet also recommends hiring a mover registered with the federal government and checking the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Protect Your Move site. You can look up our USDOT 1803573 there. You book with Dry Ridge directly, not through a broker.
Many military moves from Asheville are long hauls across the state or the region. Two major installations, Fort Bragg near Fayetteville and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune near Jacksonville, are in North Carolina, so a move between Western North Carolina and either one is an in-state move under our NC Utilities Commission certificate C-2490.
A move to a post across a state line, such as Fort Campbell on the Kentucky and Tennessee border, is an interstate move under USDOT 1803573 and MC-655700, with the federal paperwork that comes with it. We cover the Southeast and can arrange the best timing possible to deliver items when and where you need them.
Report dates and housing dates do not always match. Our secure on-site shared storage can hold your household until the new place is ready. If you plan to claim storage under a PPM, confirm the authorized length and the paperwork with your transportation office first.
You can pack yourself, or have our crew pack the whole house, as described on our movers and packers page. Every piece of furniture is padded and shrink-wrapped, and your belongings travel on one truck with one crew, never mixed with another family’s load.
Once you have left the service, or if your family is moving on its own while a member is deployed or stationed elsewhere, the move is a regular private move with no transportation office involved. We serve Asheville and the towns on our locations page, and most local moves finish in a day, two at most.
Your transportation office books those moves and assigns the moving company. If you are doing a Personally Procured Move instead, you can hire a licensed mover such as Dry Ridge after getting approval from your transportation office.
A commercial moving company is one of the ways to conduct a PPM. Get your orders and your transportation office’s approval first, confirm your entitlements, then call us for a written estimate.
A written estimate before the move and receipts for what you pay. Ask us about weight tickets when you call, since your branch may require them for reimbursement.
Yes, within the Southeast. Moves across state lines run under our USDOT 1803573 and MC-655700 interstate authority.
Tell us your origin, your destination, your report or move-in date, and whether the move is a PPM. We will quote by phone or set up a walkthrough in person or by video, and give you a written estimate. Call (828) 450-3315 or fill out the form below to get a free quote.
