Moving Help in Asheville, NC: Labor-Only Loading and Unloading

You bring the truck or container. We bring the crew.

What Labor-Only Moving Help Means

Labor-only moving help is for people who have already arranged their own transportation. You rent the truck or order the portable storage container. A Dry Ridge crew comes to your place in Asheville or elsewhere in Western North Carolina to do the heavy part: carrying everything out and loading it, or unloading at the far end and bringing it inside.

You handle the vehicle and the trip. We handle the lifting, wrapping and stacking. If you would rather hand off the entire job, our truck included, see residential movers for houses or apartment movers for apartments and condos.

What You Provide and What We Bring

On a labor-only job, the vehicle is yours to reserve, drive and return. Usually that means one of two things:

  • A rental truck that you pick up from a rental company and drive yourself
  • A portable storage container that a container company drops at your curb or driveway and hauls away later

Our crew shows up with the equipment for carrying heavy pieces, and your furniture is padded and shrink-wrapped before it goes in. Boxes are your part of the job unless you hire us to pack; our movers and packers page explains that service.

Loading Order and Weight Distribution

How a truck or container gets loaded matters as much as how quickly. A load that shifts on the highway crushes boxes and scuffs furniture, and an uneven truck can sway or feel harder to control on turns and stops. Rental and container companies publish similar loading advice, and it lines up with how our crews work:

  • The heaviest, sturdiest pieces go in first and sit on the floor as the base of each tier: dressers, sofas, desks, washers and dryers
  • Weight stays roughly equal on the left and right sides, and in a container it is spread along the full length so it rides evenly over the hauling truck’s axles
  • Boxes are stacked heavy on the bottom and light on top, in tight rows built up toward the ceiling
  • Each section is strapped or tied off before the next one begins, so a hard stop doesn’t topple the load
  • Light and fragile items go in last, on top of secure tiers where nothing rests on them

Unloading at the Other End

Unloading is the same job in reverse, except that everything has to land in the right room. Mark each box with its destination room before loading day, and the crew will carry it there. Furniture comes off in the reverse of the order it went on, gets unwrapped, and is placed in the rooms you choose.

We can load in one place and unload in another, as long as we can cover both addresses. Tell us both when you call and we will confirm.

Jobs Where Labor-Only Makes Sense

Moving help is a good match when:

  • You have already reserved a rental truck or container and need loaders for a few hours
  • A container is being dropped in the Asheville area and you plan to ship it rather than hire a long-distance mover
  • A truck or container has arrived in Western North Carolina from somewhere else and needs emptying
  • You have the muscle for boxes but not for a solid oak dresser or a sleeper sofa

It is a weaker fit if you don’t want to drive a loaded truck yourself. In that case, a full-service move with our truck and crew is the simpler choice, and we are glad to talk through which makes more sense for your move.

What Stays With You on a Labor-Only Job

With moving help, the vehicle remains your responsibility from start to finish: renting it, driving it, fueling it, parking it and returning it. The container company’s drop-off and pickup schedule is yours to arrange as well. Our job is loading and unloading; nothing is transported by us on a labor-only booking. Set up the truck or container first, then call us with the date and time it will be in place.

Booking Moving Help in Western North Carolina

To quote a labor-only job we need a few details: the addresses, the size of the truck or container, roughly what is going in or coming out, and any stairs or long walks at each end. We can quote by phone, or by a video walkthrough if there is a lot to load, and you’ll receive a written estimate. Our crews have been loading and unloading around Asheville since 2006; the locations page lists the towns we serve. Want to hear from past customers first? Read our customer reviews.
