A move later in life usually runs from a bigger house to a smaller place: an apartment or cottage at a retirement community, a one-level home, or a house nearer to children and grandchildren. You decide which belongings come along. Our job is to pack them, move them and get them inside the new place in good shape.
Dry Ridge Moving has moved households around Asheville and Western North Carolina since 2006. Many people planning a senior move also want the packing done for them, so this page links often to our movers and packers service.
The Asheville area has several continuing care and life plan communities, among them Deerfield on Hendersonville Road, Givens Estates in south Asheville and Carolina Village in Hendersonville. Moving into a community like these is different from moving into a private house, because the community sets the terms for move-in day.
Before you book a date, ask the community for its move-in rules in writing. Useful things to find out:
Share those details when you request a quote. We plan the crew’s arrival and the carry from the truck to your door around them.
Downsizing means some furniture will not fit the new place. Deciding what stays behind is up to you before moving day. Once you know which pieces are coming, tell us, and the estimate covers only what is actually going.
On moving day, mark anything that is not coming so it stays put. The crew moves what you have chosen and nothing else. A written estimate based on the real list helps you see what the move involves before you commit.
Packing a house that has been lived in for decades is hard physical work. You can pack it yourself, or our crew can pack the whole home, from the china cabinet to the last closet shelf. After the move, we unpack as many boxes as you would like us to open.
Before loading starts, point out heirlooms, framed photographs or any piece that matters most, and the crew will pack and load it with that in mind. Furniture is padded and shrink-wrapped, and you are welcome to sit and watch the work, or ask questions as it goes.
The timing of a senior move rarely lines up perfectly. A community apartment may open up weeks before the house closes, or a buyer may need the house before the new place is ready. Our secure on-site shared storage can hold furniture and boxes in between, so neither date has to force the other.
If ice or snow is in the forecast for your moving day, we will call you to move the start time or the date. Slick steps and walkways are a hazard for everyone on a move, so we would rather choose a safer day.
Some moves head the other way: out of the mountains to be near family in another part of the Southeast. We handle long-distance moves throughout the region with one truck and one crew, and we never combine your belongings with another household’s load. Long-distance pricing is a combination of weight, cubic feet, distance and fuel cost, and we can arrange the best timing possible to deliver items when and where you need them. Our long-distance movers page covers the federal paperwork for interstate moves.
Dry Ridge Moving and Transportation, LLC holds NC Utilities Commission certificate C-2490 for moves inside North Carolina, and USDOT 1803573 and MC-655700 for interstate household goods. We are rated 4.9 stars on Google.
One customer who combined two homes into one wrote that “the team was so kind to me, compassionate, and easy to work with.” (Google review, Shelley R.) You can read more on our customer reviews page.
Deciding what comes along is up to you. Once you know, tell us, and we pack and move only those belongings.
Yes. We can pack every room, or you can pack everything yourself. After the move we unpack as many boxes as you choose.
We have secure on-site shared storage that can hold your belongings until the new place is ready.
Most local moves finish in a day, two at most. Long-distance moves take longer, and we can arrange delivery timing that suits you.
