Canton, NC Moving Company for Homes and Businesses

Canton is a Pigeon River town of about 4,400 people, 17 miles west of Asheville in Haywood County. Dry Ridge Moving handles residential, commercial and long-distance moves here, planned around the river district, three nearby I-40 exits and a town working through a big economic change.

Canton movers for houses, apartments and shops

Many Canton moves can be quoted over the phone. For larger homes we can walk through in person or by video, and the estimate always comes in writing. Your belongings ride alone: one crew, one truck, no shared loads. Beds, dressers and sofas get padding and shrink-wrap before they’re carried out. We also run commercial moves for Canton offices and storefronts, and our crews can pack every room of a house before the truck is loaded.

Residential Moves

Whole-house moves across Western North Carolina, including homes on steep or gravel drives.

Apartment & Condo Moves

Moves in and out of apartments and condos, planned around stairs, elevators and building rules.

A mill town after the mill

For 115 years the paper mill on the Pigeon River set Canton’s rhythm. Pactiv Evergreen shut it down in June 2023, and roughly 1,100 jobs ended with it. In January 2025 Two Banks Development and Spirtas Worldwide finished buying the 185-acre site, with plans for industrial, commercial and residential uses.

Champion, the mill’s original owner, built Fibreville for its workers, a neighborhood of 60 company homes. If you live in one of Canton’s older houses, mention porch steps and stairways when you ask for a quote. If the closure means a job move out of the area, a written estimate gives you a firm plan before you commit to dates.

Living along the Pigeon River

The river cuts straight through Canton, and it has flooded the town twice since 2021. Tropical Storm Fred came first, in August 2021. Helene, in September 2024, was worse: some homes and businesses on the river took about eight feet of water, and owners of the hardest-hit houses had to choose between a FEMA buyout and elevating to rebuild. Our WNC Migration Study tracks how the storm shifted moving patterns across the region.

  • Buying near the river? Ask about flood history and any elevation work before you set a move date.
  • Selling after a buyout? Give us your closing date. If the next home isn’t ready, our secure on-site storage can hold your things.
  • Moving on or off Main Street? The Canton Main Street Historic District is on the National Register, so send the address early and we’ll plan where the crew loads.

Labor Day weekend and the road to Tennessee

Canton has thrown a Labor Day Festival for more than a century, with a parade through downtown and crowds at Sorrells Street Park. If your move lands on that weekend, pick another day if you can.

Canton moves usually reach I-40 at Exit 31 (NC 215, Champion Drive), Exit 33 (Newfound Road) or Exit 37 (East Canton). Westbound to Knoxville, the interstate runs through the Pigeon River Gorge, where traffic has been held to one lane each way since March 2025. NCDOT is aiming for three lanes by late 2028 and all four by late 2029. We check NCDOT closure notices before we set a route and an arrival time.

Long-distance and cold-weather moves

We move Canton households throughout the Southeast under USDOT 1803573. Long-distance pricing depends on weight, cubic feet, distance and fuel cost, and you get a written estimate before you book. We can arrange the best timing possible to deliver items when and where you need them.

Canton sits at 2,631 feet. If ice, snow or other hazards show up in the forecast for move day, we phone you to shift the start time or reschedule before any crew drives an unsafe road.

Canton, Clyde and the rest of Haywood County

From Canton we also serve Clyde, Cruso, Bethel and Lake Junaluska, seven miles west. Next door we cover Candler to the east and Waynesville to the west.

Send us the address, the destination and whether it’s a house or a business. Get a free quote below or call (828) 450-3315.

Moving in Canton: common questions

How far is Canton from Asheville?

About 17 miles west. US 19/23 runs through the center of town, and I-40 passes just to the north.

Do you move businesses in Canton?

Yes. We move offices and shops, including furniture, files and equipment, with a written estimate before we start.

Can you move me from Canton to Tennessee while I-40 is under repair?

Yes. The Pigeon River Gorge section has carried one lane each way since March 2025, and NCDOT expects all four lanes back by late 2029. We plan the route around current conditions.

Is Labor Day weekend a bad time to move in Canton?

Downtown is busy that weekend. The Labor Day Festival brings a parade through downtown and big crowds to Sorrells Street Park, so another date is easier.

Do Canton movers from Dry Ridge pack too?

Yes. Our crews can pack the whole home before loading and unpack it at the new place.
