Those are planning numbers from industry guides, not promises. The real time depends on how much you own, how much of it is fragile, and how ready the house is when the crew walks in. Below is the full table by home size, what changes the timeline, and a checklist for the day before and the day of.

A few notes on reading the table:
- Most companies send at least two packers, even for a studio, according to ConsumerAffairs. Bigger homes get bigger crews. ConsumerAffairs puts a 4-bedroom job at four or more packers working 8 to 12 hours.
- DIY hours are total hours, not calendar time. U-Pack suggests dividing by the number of people helping. Two people can finish 40 hours of packing in about 20 hours each.
- Add time for storage spaces. U-Pack adds 3 to 5 hours for a basement, attic or storage area. A garage full of tools and holiday bins can add more.
- Apartments often pack faster than houses with the same bedroom count, because there is less storage to fill. That is why the table lists them separately.
What speeds packing up
Professional packers work fastest when nothing stops them to ask a question. These steps cut the most time:
- Get rid of things before packing day. Every item you sell, donate or toss is one less item to wrap, box and carry.
- Decide what is not going. Put items you are keeping with you, throwing out or giving away in one marked room or closet. Tell the crew lead on arrival.
- Empty the trash and the fridge. Packers do not pack perishable food, open liquids or garbage.
- Finish the laundry. Wet or dirty clothes slow down closets and dressers.
- Clear a path. Open space in each room gives the crew a place to build and stack boxes.
- Have the right crew size. HireAHelper notes that a three-person crew packs much faster than one or two packers. Ask about crew size when you book.

What slows packing down
- The kitchen. It has the most small, breakable items in the house. Every glass and plate gets wrapped one at a time.
- Fragile and high-value items. Glassware, artwork, mirrors, lamps and electronics take longer to wrap and may need custom crating. See how to pack fragile and valuable items.
- Clutter and mixed rooms. HireAHelper lists disorganized spaces as a main cause of delays. Packers have to sort before they can box.
- Full drawers and unsorted closets. Ask your mover whether dressers can travel with clothes inside. If not, empty them ahead of time.
- Missing supplies. A crew that runs out of boxes or paper stops working. Confirm who is bringing materials.
- Layout. More rooms, stairs and storage areas mean more walking and more time, according to HireAHelper.
The day before the packers arrive
- Confirm the arrival window, crew size and whether the crew is bringing boxes, paper and tape.
- Set aside an “open first” box: chargers, medications, toilet paper, a change of clothes, basic tools, snacks and cleaning supplies.
- Put valuables you are moving yourself in your car or a locked room: jewelry, passports, cash, key documents, hard drives.
- Mark the “do not pack” room or closet with a sign.
- Empty and defrost the freezer if it is moving.
- Finish laundry and run the dishwasher, then unload it.
- Take photos of the back of your TV and computer before you unplug them, so reconnecting is easy.
- Remove wall-mounted items you want packed if the crew will not take them down. Ask your mover what they handle.
- Reserve parking or a loading spot near the door. In an apartment, book the freight elevator if your building requires it.
- Arrange care for kids and pets for packing day if you can.
Packing day
- Walk the crew lead through every room, including the basement, attic, garage and any outbuildings.
