An apartment move is usually smaller than a house move, but it comes with more rules. A building manager may decide the hours you can move, which elevator you use and where a truck is allowed to stand. Downtown Asheville adds metered curbs and busy sidewalks to the list. Dry Ridge Moving has handled apartment and condo moves around Asheville since 2006, and most of the work on one of these jobs happens before the truck pulls up.
This page is about that preparation. Moving out of a house instead? See our residential movers page. Already rented your own truck or container and just need people to carry? Our labor-only moving help is the better fit.
Apartment communities and condo associations usually have written move rules, and they vary from one building to the next. Before you book, ask your leasing office or HOA:
Pass their answers along when you request a quote. If the building wants paperwork from the mover, mention it early so there is time to sort it out before your date.
In a mid-rise or high-rise building, the elevator sets the pace of the whole day. Some buildings let a resident book the service elevator for a fixed block of hours, with another move scheduled right behind yours. We plan around that block, so the crew is ready to start loading the moment the elevator is yours and the reservation isn’t spent waiting.
If both your old and new buildings require reservations, send us both windows and we will time the crew’s arrival to each one. Most local apartment moves wrap up in a single day, two at the most.
Downtown and along other dense blocks, the hardest part of an apartment move can be finding a legal spot for the truck close to the entrance. The City of Asheville takes applications to temporarily close metered parking spaces or loading zones for non-routine needs, and moving is one of the reasons it lists. Each request is reviewed, and the city asks for at least 72 hours’ notice, so apply as soon as your date is firm.
Outside downtown, many complexes have fire lanes and crowded lots where a truck can’t sit for long. Ask the property where movers should park, and tell us about gate codes or restricted entrances. The shorter the walk from truck to door, the shorter the day.
If your building has no elevator, a third-floor walk-up means every box and every piece of furniture travels down the stairs by hand. Our crews work out the turn at each landing before they lift, and they carry sofas, mattresses and dressers in an order that keeps the stairwell clear for the next trip.
Furniture is padded and shrink-wrapped inside your unit before it heads for the stairs, which protects the finish through tight corners. Tell us how many flights there are at each address when you call, so the quote reflects the real carry.
Many leases end on the last day of a month and begin on the first, so apartment moves bunch up at month’s end. If your old lease runs out the same day the new one starts, there is very little slack for delays. Book early, and ask both landlords whether you can pick up keys a day sooner or hand them back a day later.
When the dates don’t overlap at all, our secure on-site shared storage can hold your things between apartments. Students moving between rentals near UNC Asheville or A-B Tech often run into the same timing problem.
No other customer’s belongings share the truck with yours. One crew and one truck handle your apartment move from your old door to your new one. Moves within North Carolina fall under our NC Utilities Commission certificate C-2490. If your next apartment is in another Southeastern state, we carry it under USDOT 1803573 and MC-655700; our long-distance movers page explains how those moves are handled.
Reservations are usually made by the resident through the leasing office or HOA. Book it as soon as you have a date, then send us the time window so we can schedule the crew around it.
Often, with some planning. The City of Asheville accepts applications to temporarily close metered spaces or loading zones for a move and asks for at least 72 hours’ notice. Check with your building too, since some have their own loading area.
No, that is labor-only help. See our moving help page.
Yes. We can pack the entire apartment, or you can pack it yourself. See movers and packers for how our packing works.
Send us both addresses, the floor and elevator situation at each one, and your lease dates. We can quote by phone or through a walkthrough in person or by video, and you’ll get a written estimate. Call (828) 450-3315 or fill out the form below to get a free quote.
